The Different Waterproofing Membranes Available For Your Home

Jun 21, 2023

Your home’s defence against water damage is incomplete without waterproofing membranes. These specialised materials create a barrier against moisture, ensuring moisture cannot infiltrate your home’s structure, sparing you from the nightmares of mould, rot and structural damage. In this blog, we will explore the various types of waterproofing membranes available for your home, highlighting their features, benefits and applications.

1. Bituminous Membranes

One of the most common types of waterproofing membranes is bituminous membranes. These membranes are made of asphalt and come in sheet membranes and liquid membranes.

1.1 Sheet Membranes

Sheet membranes consist of a thin layer of asphalt or modified bitumen reinforced with materials like fibreglass or polyester. They are available in rolls and are applied by unrolling the membrane and bonding it to the surface using an adhesive or torching method.

Sheet membranes offer excellent waterproofing capabilities and are commonly used for below-grade applications such as basements and foundations. They are also suitable for roofs and have a long lifespan, providing durable protection against water infiltration.

1.2 Liquid Membranes

Liquid membranes, as the name suggests, are applied in liquid form and then cured to form a seamless, flexible membrane. These membranes are typically made of modified bitumen or polyurethane and offer excellent adhesion to various surfaces.

Liquid membranes are highly versatile and can be used on horizontal and vertical surfaces. They are particularly useful for irregularly shaped areas or those with complex detailing. Liquid membranes provide a seamless waterproofing solution and are often used for balconies, terraces and wet areas such as toilets and kitchens.

2. Cementitious Membranes

Cementitious membranes are another popular choice for waterproofing homes. These membranes are made from cement, sand and proprietary additives. They are usually available in powder form and require mixing with water before application.

When applied, these membranes form a thick, durable layer, creating a barrier against water penetration. Cementitious membranes offer excellent resistance to hydrostatic pressure, making them suitable for areas with high water exposure.

However, it's important to note that cementitious membranes may require additional protection against UV radiation and should be covered with a suitable coating or finishing material for durability.

3. Polyurethane Membranes

Polyurethane membranes are a popular choice for both new construction and waterproofing renovations. These membranes are made from a liquid polyurethane compound that cures into a flexible, elastic membrane upon application.

Polyurethane membranes offer exceptional waterproofing capabilities, even in areas with high movement or structural vibrations. They adhere well to various surfaces and can be applied as a liquid or sprayed directly onto the substrate.

These membranes are commonly used for roofs, terraces, balconies and other areas exposed to weathering. They provide excellent resistance against water, UV radiation and mechanical stress, ensuring long-term protection for your home.

4. EPDM Membranes

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) membranes are synthetic rubber membranes widely used for waterproofing applications. These membranes are available in rolls and can be mechanically fastened, fully adhered or ballasted during installation.

EPDM membranes offer excellent resistance to UV radiation, weathering and ozone exposure. They are highly flexible and can accommodate building movements without compromising their waterproofing capabilities. EPDM membranes are commonly used for flat roofs, green roofs and below-grade applications.
